Just before Kevin and I crossed over the border into Canada, we stopped into Suzy Q’s BBQ in Buffalo, NY to get one last taste of good ol’ American grub.

We got to the restaurant before it opened (doors open at 11am), so we waited in the parking lot while they finished smoking the day’s meat. While waiting, a waitress put a sign up on the door indicating the day’s meats, which were smoked turkey, smoked polish sausage, and chicken. Unfortunately, they did not have beef brisket or pork, which was quite the bummer. Nonetheless, we tried not to let the lack of brisket bring us down.
Since it was Fourth of July weekend, there were quite a few orders for pick up. When the customers came in to pick up their orders, the meat was ready and carefully placed in big cardboard moving boxes for easier carrying. The restaurant and its workers were casual and friendly. Our waitress addressed a few customers by name and chatted with everyone who walking into the restaurant, even us outsiders.
…and that’s fine by me!
I ordered the Smoked Turkey BBQ sandwich, which was delivered bare and simple with a side of pickles. Before slathering my sandwich with one of Suzy Q’s Homemade Kansas City BBQ sauces, I tasted the meat and realized Suzy Q did not depend on its sauces. By itself, the turkey was flavorful, juicy, and smoked to perfection. The sauces themselves were only meant to enhance the flavor, not cover up over-smoked and under-seasoned meat.
Still, I added a little bit of Suzy Q’s Homemade Sweet Kansas City BBQ sauce. Yummm!
Now here’s Kevin’s order, the Two-Meat Heap of BBQ Combo with Smoked Turkey and Smoked Polish Sausage with a side of cornbread:
Yes, the polish sausage was delicious, but the real star of the show was the cornbread. I am sitting next to Kevin while writing this post, and we are both talking about what we would do for that cinnamon-sugar-covered piece of heaven right there. The edges were perfectly crispy, the top was crunchy, but the inside was soft and moist. How they do it, I will never know, but as long as Suzy Q’s keeps on serving these babies, that’s okay with me.
Um, waitress…it seems I never got my food…
I wish we were able to try more on the menu, including their famous “Piggy Pie,” but we needed to make our way to Canada’s Wonderland. So, overall, how would I rate Suzy Q’s? Four out of five stars. The meats were savory and smoky, and we were served potentially the best cornbread we’ve ever had; however, the fact that not all meats were available hindered our experience. They also did not have a few of the sides (including the fried corn, which we had read raving reviews about), which was another downside. Perhaps there was only a shortage due to the holiday weekend, but the lack of items is the reason I did not feel I could give Suzy Q’s more than four stars. STILL, if you are in the area, I highly recommend you stop by! The atmosphere is inviting, the food is satisfying and overly-filling, and the prices (and cornbread!) will have you coming back for more.
