After a chilly morning at Six Flags Great Escape, we stopped into Trip Advisor’s #2-rated Sammy D’s Café in Lake George, NY for some lunch.
A small café located amongst outlet stores, Sammy D’s offers a variety of soup and sandwiches to enjoy while breaking up a day of shopping or enjoying the Lake George area.
The café is located within the Adirondack Outlet Mall on route 9 in Lake George. Above is a reference of nearby stores to help you better find the café.
As you walk into the above entrance of the mall, Sammy D’s is unmistakable. Located next to Under Armour, the café is logically placed to allow for adequate seating and waiting areas.
The food is all cooked fresh right here, at the café “stand.” Though the café does not necessary have its own walled-in location, the food is not fast-food or low-quality. I was pleasantly surprised with the flavors and options offered by Sammy D’s.
A view of the seating area, donned with autumn decorations and local artwork. A casual seating area, perfect for chatting and enjoying some lunch.
Here is a view of some of the local art pieces. I love when cafes incorporate local influence; it makes visitors and tourists feel comfortable within unknown settings and adds to the specific atmosphere. Now enough sightseeing, let’s get down to the food!
My choice was easy, thanks to the daily specials. One southwest chicken, black bean, and corn soup coming up! Note that Sammy D’s café is rated #2 on TripAdvisor, which is exactly how we found it. When you stop by, make sure you include a review of your experience to keep ’em going!
There is an array of vegetarian options…
…and delicious toasted sandwiches! Kevin ultimately decided on The Chief, since the sandwich just so happened to be comprised of his favorite sandwich inclusions.
While waiting for our food to be freshly prepared, I took a short walk down the mall and came across this bit of information about Storytown USA, the park that existed before Great Escape. I loved reading about the amusement park’s history (see close-ups below), and I thought the artwork added to the very apparent “local” feel.
Walking through Great Escape, you can still see (somewhat terrifying) remnants of storybook characters and other memorabilia scattered throughout Great Escape. Take a look at our review of Six Flags Great Escape to see for yourself.
Storytown USA, 1956. All of this history is making me hungry!
My homemade chicken, black bean, and corn soup served with a side of corn tortilla chips. The soup was extremely tasty and perfectly fitting for a chilly fall afternoon. I would undoubtedly recommend this soup to anyone visiting the café looking for something light yet filling, assuming the option will be offered other days (it was a special).
Kevin’s warm, toasty, flavorful sandwich piled high with chicken, bacon, and caramelized onions, served with a side of tortilla chips. I would include the five pictures I have of Kevin devouring this sandwich, but he advised me not to upload them because he’s too embarrassed. In one picture, he has a glob of BBQ sauce on his face. I captured Kevin’s face contorted in all sorts of delight and satisfaction from the sandwich. I’ve been holding onto these photos for blackmail…
After lunch, you may be in the mood for some dessert, and lucky for you Sammy D’s has plenty of options! Take a look at all of their soft serve flavors (24 and more!).
If you’re not in the mood for ice cream, you can instead opt for a “homemade treat,” such as muffins, cookies, and brownies.
Here is proof that the treats are homemade. How about some cornbread and brownies still warm from the oven? Yum!
Sammy D’s is a must if looking for an affordable, casual café with homemade sandwiches and soups. The only downside is its location; without Trip Advisor, we definitely would not have noticed it with a simple drive-by. We even passed the café after knowing its general location. Regardless, make a stop into Sammy D’s to break up a day of outlet shopping or sightseeing. The staff is friendly and the local atmosphere will make you wish for a Sammy D’s in your hometown (if you’re not already from the Lake George area). I promise you will not be disappointed.
